One of the best things about college are the countless opportunities to start over and explore different facets of life! College often marks the first-time people are independent and have the time to reflect on what they are passionate about and can pursue projects they are excited about.
When people first get to college, they are shocked by the amount of free time they have. This is especially true for freshman who just left the hectic High School lifestyle. In High School, you go to class for 7 hours, then have an after-school sport, then still have hours of homework to do. So, it comes as a shock to most when in college they are met with unexpected down time. After freshman year however, the busy schedule picks up again. In that case, sometimes people just need an outlet to relax and engage in an activity that isn't school related.
If you are interested are unsure how to fill up some of that newfound time you have or need an outlet for stress, consider picking up a new hobby! We have put together this list to get you thinking about a hobby to pick up at Texas Tech University:
Art
If you are someone who enjoys being creative and struggles with anxiety, participating in an art activity could definitely be the hobby for you! Art is subjective and that's the beauty of it. There is no right and wrong, you just get to create. According to several research studies, engaging in artistic activities not only alleviates anxiety and stress but it also enhances brain function.
A benefit of participating in an art activity is that unlike many other activities, you have the flexibility to do it wherever you are! You could paint in your TTU apartment on a rainy day or go to a pottery class on a free day – you have options! You also have the option to engage in whichever art form you prefer.
Forms of art:
- Painting
- Coloring
- Pottery
- Clay molds
- Drawing
Sewing
If you are someone who likes fashion and thrives from a challenge, try sewing as your new hobby! To begin, you will need to spend money on a good machine and thread, but after you have this machine, the up-keep becomes less expensive. The great thing about sewing in college is that it gives you the liberty to create your own clothing. If you are someone who likes to stand out, picking up this hobby will give you the chance to create second glance catching stares from outfits you create and bragging rights that you made it. There's nothing like creating something of your own that you are proud of.
This hobby also gives you the opportunity to make some side income that any college student's pocket would appreciate! By watching videos on YouTube or taking a class, you can soon start altering other TTU student's clothing. The best part about this hobby is that you can do it in your very own TTU apartment.
Sports
Picking up a new sport or hitting your Lubbock apartment gym is always a good idea! Not only is it a great way to stay active and healthy but it is also a great way to meet friends. Participating in sports foster a sense of inclusion and can be an incredibly bonding experience.
A lot of apartments have team sport nights. To connect with more people in your TTU apartment, consider getting a group of people to hit the volleyball or basketball courts. You can then set a day in the week to get together and participate in this new hobby.
Blogging
Blogging has grown in popularity in recent years especially pertaining to college student-life. You can blog either through a website you make or creating something like a YouTube. Blogging is a great hobby for the person that knows something specific about a niche or just wants to document their life in a vulnerable way.
